Good Dog. Stay.

I received a precious gift from my parents recently. A first edition book by Anna Quindlen called Good Dog. Stay.

Last night I read the whole book. Yep, a whole book.  Granted, it’s not a long book, but considering how much of my “reading” is digital these days it felt like quite the accomplishment.

Falling asleep after a good cry must be better than Tylenol P.M. as I overslept my alarm by at least an hour.  And those of you who have lost a “fur child” know just how deeply they touch you.  I still feel like our dear Jackson is with us, it’s been over a year, right around the time I started this blog…and we have a new dog (below)–but I still think of him every day.

The last page of the book brought me to bittersweet tears.  The author writes about what she learned in the course of her old dog’s (Beau) life of 15 years (which is pretty long for a lab)

“Starting out I thought that life was terribly complex, and in some ways it is, But contentment can be pretty simple.

And that’s what I learned from watching Beau over his lifetime: to roll with the punches, to take things as they come, to measure myself not in terms of the past or the future but of the present, to raise my nose in the air from time to time and, at least metaphorically holler, “I smell bacon!”  I’m not what I once was, and neither by the end was he.

Sometimes an old dog teaches you new tricks.”

Irreverent Interiors

I love the word “irreverence”, and all that it implies.  But the term IRREVERENT is especially good in the context of design and interiors.

(Not sure exactly who to credit here, the Queen perhaps?)

I see this so often…people showing too much restraint and playing it safe with their interiors.  Boooor-innnggg.  Unexpected elements and “daring to go there” is so much more interesting.

This is the “m.o.” of amazing designers, Bob & Cortney Novogratz and it works so well.  Their new site, The Novogratz is under construction, hurry up guys!  Otherwise it would FOR SURE be a part of my Blog Love/Roll (did you notice a new lil. addition in the right sidebar?  This is only a mere start of blogs I love.  Send a comment if you’re privy to a blog that may cover similar material)

Talk about having some cajones while designing a baby’s nursery.  I suppose they have learned a thing or two since this is now their 7th, that’s right, 7th bambino.  I also hear that their NEW show is coming to HGTV soon, I can’t wait!!

Ann Carrington’s flag, LOVE.  Cow Hide rug, LOVE.  Rod iron day bed, LOVE.  So not Pooh Bear, LOVE.  Screw the glider, they are ugly anyways.

And now take a little meander over to this gorgeous room from the Greystone Estate.

Irreverant?  A little bit, you know classic wood paneling, and pink zebra throw?   Enormous over sized wall covering–couldn’t love anymore.  Bravo.

Don’t keep so calm, but still carry on.

This weekend at the Market

We have a little family weekend tradition of hitting the local farmer’s markets over the weekend. Have even been known to take a ferry in exploration of good markets, like to Vashon Island, or Bainbridge Island or others as the pickin’ starts to get good.

This sign should be motivation enough to lower your carbon footprint, right?

As unbelievable as it is, several markets here are open year round, though they are starting to amp up by offering more variety of ” fresh” as it’s now officially Spring.

So my plan is to provide a review of the weekend’s goodies and some simple preparation ideas each Monday as a standing post.  I hope you’re into it.

This time of year, tulips are the official “greeters” of the market.  Always good for an inexpensive, while still elegant centerpiece.

I’m still in awe of the amazing growers that hail from this area.  Check out the daffys dancing in the sunlight and fresh mint for juleps.  Start honing in our your technique now in advance of the Kentucky Derby.  Delish recipe from Food Network Here.

Collared greens have entered the scene. Yummy recipe from Gena Knox here for Collared Greens with Ginger and Soy, a fresh take on a traditional southern comfort side dish.

Couldn’t resist a few scoops of cannellini beans.  Check out this mouth watering recipe for Chargrilled Tuna with Dressed Beans here by Jamie Oliver.

Next up the ‘Shroom stand.

We’re talking about food here, remember?  Interesting tid bit for you, turns out that lions mane mushrooms are not only are tasty, they appear to have nerve regenerating properties, stimulating nerve growth and aiding those with cognitive impairments.  Note the funny sign reminding us all to check out the crazy moon or biggest in 20 years, Sat. night.  Did you see it?

Back to the shrooms, it’s so easy to saute mushrooms and they’ll pack a flavor punch to so many of your favorite dishes–like burgers, fresh pizza, crostinis, and more.

Root veggies are always a good one to throw into your basket.  Roasting with olive oil, salt and pepper is simple and delicious.  Beets are a bit of an obsession in our house these days, the golden beets especially.

Now on to the cheese guy, from Port Madison Cheese.  This is goat’s milk cheese.  A simple delicious addition crumbled on top of your roasted beets (above) on a bed of arugula.

Of course a lot of folks end their meal with cheese, but if it’s a sweet finish that you are looking for, JonBoy caramels are a little slice of heaven.  Note the distressed expression on the caramel man’s face as my little angel touches more than one sample…:)

Fridge stocked for some good eatin’ this week.

Go Big or Go Home

It’s Friday after a bit of a looong week readjusting to the time change and all.  At this point, all I can really say is;  Go big or go home.

A few images to propel you into that home stretch of the weekend.

I think he’s saying to himself,  “it’s 5:00 somewhere.”

This is my dog eating a 3 ft. rawhide hide.  He is such a freak.

I figured the photo opp. alone would justify the $15 price.  Little did I know he would actually eat that entire thing in a mere couple days.

This is called a “Texas Donut”  And a bit disgusting, I have to admit (no offense Texans)…

Ahhh, dreaming of some “pow” and “big air” in the Blue Sky Basin right around now.

Sushi Supper tonight, and I’m sure we’ll go big with that.  What’s the point otherwise?  Pics. on Monday.

Happy Weekend Everyone!

Scenes of Green

Listening to Irish songs is making me so nostalgic. On this St. Patty’s Day and for the moment (but hopefully longer), it’s truly in perspective what is important…

An Old Irish Blessing

May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life’s passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!

A few final scenes of green for you today:

Our Centerpiece for a traditional family Irish meal

One of my favorite neighborhood gardens. There is a reason we are called “The Emerald City.”

May good fortune be yours, may your joys never end.
