Tea Time

Few activities reach the height of civilization and sophistication as attending afternoon tea. In a world filled frenzy and immediacy, take a moment to luxuriate with a loved one over this delightful nicety.

In the words of Henry James from The Portrait of a Lady, "There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

Bergdorfs otherwise known as provider of all things chic in Manhattan, hosts a very special afternoon tea. A friend texted me about this, lamenting on how we should have been together to enjoy their lovely production.

Can you believe these little tea cookies depicting the pinnacle of fashion accessories, Christian Louboutin shoes (wondering how many mentions on the blog towards a free pair?–kidding!) and the classic quilted Chanel bag are edible?

DIVINE!

When I was recently in Savannah, I had the opportunity to enjoy afternoon tea with my parents and oldest daughter. Tea time at A Whimsical Tea Cup is the ultimate little girls fantasy, yet amusing and entertaining for all ages, i.e. the rest of us.

This darling little shop offers dressers and armoire's over brimming with dress up items like feathered boas and large brim hats and long gloves to get one into a festive mood. They serve darling and delicious tea sandwiches on tiered trays, but of course! Pink lemonade in ornate tea pots is served to the little ones and hundreds of varietals of tea to everyone else. One of my favorite other details was a Audrey Hepburn inspired powder room, with a dressing table, covered with pearls and the original l.b.d. (little black dress) hanging on the wall and more!

You can pretty much bank on a nice tea being offered at any classic luxury hotel like the Ritz Carlton. I remember when my father took me to tea at the Ritz as a special present when graduating high school, an experience I will never forget. Tea time at the Ritz is like an institution–you must experience it.

Is it tea time yet! ?

Viva La Babysitter!

We lead a pretty active lifestyle, lots of coming, going, traveling, etc. Though recently our sacred tradition of weekly date night has gone to the wayside as we make room for group activities, etc. But alas, it returned this week and ahhh, the restorative effect…

Went to see the movie Greenberg. This is one of those stick with you flicks. I can't stop thinking about it. I'm always intrigued when a comedian, like Ben Stiller in this case can pull off a dark complicated role.

But it's funny in parts of, course. I mean, how can he not–just looking at him, pretty much I laugh. There is a scene where he is crossing the street in a cross walk and car almost turns into him, so he knocks the car and the car stops and threateningly turns around, which both surprises and scares him and then he runs away. The image, even typing it is cracking me up. You should go see it, in the meantime, check out the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=059skh1bn8Y

Then off to my favorite local cozy bistro, Le Pichet, for an after movie bite. I can never resist the fromage, no matter the hour and this spot has so many delicious wines by the glass and as you can guess, pichets and demi pichets.

We may have to double up this week on another date night, oh wait there's a movie out now baring the name, may have to go see…Also stay tuned for an upcoming post regarding Sex and the City 2

and all things fashion! Oh my GOD, I can hardly wait. Breathe Courtney, breathe.

Glass Glass Baby…

Mother’s Day is creeping up upon us May 9th.  As a mother I love this holiday as it usually means some sort of hand-crafted art project from my darlings and I usually hit the jackpot with my hubby too as our anniversary conveniently occurs right around the same time.  You’re right on it Babe, right?

But it’s the giving, not the receiving right?  Sooooo, what are you going to give your Mama?

Living in Seattle, it’s downright Un-northwestern to not support glass blowing.  May I suggest Glassybaby?

They go with every possible decor and work with every imaginable color scheme.

As the folks at Glassybaby say, “flower’s wilt, chocolates, melt” glass lasts forever.

Puppy Party

Who let the DOGS out???  You all know my feelings about themes and parties—you gotta have one.  We had a super fun canine theme at our last party in honor of our recently fêted two-year-old.  Since “dawg-gies” as she would say, are an enormous obsession in our home, this was a big hit for the B-day girl and I think for the other toddler guests and adults as well.

Some of the fun touches included simple sandwiches in the shape of dog bones.  Mrs. Cook’s (U Village, Seattle-ites) has a great selection of cookie cutters and they are a simple inexpensive way to add a special twist on many themes.

Of course we also had mini hot DOGS, and all kinds of kiddy snacks served in little pink doggy bowls (love the Target $1 section).  I made a cake in the shape of a dog face, p.s. if you don’t feel that it resembles a puppy, be kind and don’t tell me!

For entertainment, the minis took stuffed puppy dogs to the grooming station where they brushed and coiffed their four-legged buds.  Each child was given a dog tag with their name on it to decorate with doggy stickers and we had a few doggy movies, like Bolt and 101 Dalmations on hand for the kids as well.  Thought about this, after the fact, but how fun would “Pin the Tail on the Doggy” be?  And finally a real live 10 month old golden retriever named Ollie joined the festivities.

We provided puppy chow for favors (recipe below) in vintage jars for the guests to take home.

Puppy Chow

1 stick butter
1/2 c. peanut butter
12 oz. chocolate chips
9 c. Chex cereal (oat or wheat)
Powdered sugar (1 to 2 c.)

Melt butter, peanut butter and chocolate together. Add 9 cups Chex cereal and stir to coat. Then put cereal mixture into large plastic bag containing confectioners’ sugar. (Do no more than half at a time.) Shake to coat, then remove to cookie sheet until sets.

And what’s a theme party without unique décor?  We lined mini plastic dogs of various breeds on windows, ledges and shelves.

Then we made black and white photo copies of photographs of all kinds of doggies to be displayed all over our home.  Of course anything with a dog paw print made the cut like plates, napkins, streamers, balloons, etc.

Woof!

A Few of My Favorite Things

One of the most fun and amazing side effects of this new project, Living Well 7, (and yes by the way we are working on a Website…) is that so many cool sites, blogs, restaurants, boutiques, etc.get brought to my attention by readers and friends alike. Then I digest and bring the highlights to all of you!

One semi-recent discovery is One Kings Lane

Jan2010_dogs_rev
(first by my buddy, L.R. a few weeks ago and then by my M.I.L. This is a home and design membership site which you must join (it’s free), but it is well worth it. The site features weekly sales of inspired decor, like gorgeous accessories, furnishing, etc.

Some of my favorite things this week include:

Coral sconce
Distinctive coral sconce to grace a hallway or special room. $899 (retails for $2,400)

Coralcandle
and these lovely candlesticks by Point a la Ligne with beautiful embelishments from the sea. $19 for a set of 6 (that retail at $50.)

Napkin

and these whimsical deco napkin rings by home, james! for $19 for a set of 4, (retail $40).

As you can see,the prices are much more competitive than retail, so (up to 70% off) I find that things sell out pretty quickly in the manner of an auction, so you must be quick to decide. As if you need another reason to check out this site, I love, love, love the designer profiles posted and tips and resources they share. Some of the world’s best tastemakers like Barbara Barry, Elle Decor and Emma Jane Pilkington post their ideas to share.

Happy Hunting!
