More is More

This weekend we saw the movie, The Kids are All Right starring Annette Benning and Julianne Moore

(who is consistently in my line up of famous folks I would die to have at an imagined 10 person celebrity dinner party). I loved this movie, on so many levels. And haven't really stopped thinking about it since. It was funny, poignant and relevant. There were so many jewels of wisdom to glean from this flick, about parenting, relationships, marriage and more. One of those was a comment made by Julianne Moore a new landscape designer suggesting the design concept of a project as "more is more" not minimal.

But I think what she is really suggesting is a metaphor for life. To Live abundantly.

I love it. "more is more" is my mantra, when it comes to a garden (like below)…or fashion (think layered necklaces like these on my second girl crush of the post, Sarah Jessica Parker!)

…or interior design (think clustered pieces and frames hung gallery style like this image taken from Apartment Therapy).

F. minimalism.

But back to the garden metaphor. I remember reading recently in one of those "what is in and what is out " magazine articles, that a lush un-manicured garden look is "out" and that what people really want now is functional purposeful gardens, like neat grids of herbs or something?? I say screw that, and that whoever said that never had the patience to wait and watch a garden space grow and evolve over time and become a space even more beautiful than originally envisioned.

Life isn't a neat grid. It's messy and wild and beautiful, plus more is Moore!

Vintage is so “Ma-jer”

So the countdown is on…T minus 5 days until NYC Fashion Week.
I have a love/hate relationship with Rachel Zoe. OK, not true; it's a love/love relationship…her vernacular is so addicting!

So if you want to look cool at the shows, or if you want to pretend like me, that you are there. Wear a touch of vintage paired with something modern.

Where, might you ask to find vintage, how about some of RZ's NYC vintage favorites like: What Goes Around Comes Around New York. Where you can find vintage Chanel and more…

Or Chelsea Girl for cool "baubles" like these macrame necklaces
Heyeeee
Or Resurrection for something divine like this Missoni (though would never wear it together)

C'mon, you know it's "Ba-na-nas!"

Calling all “Foodies”

If you're a devotee of this blog, you'll know that I consider the term "foodie" annoying, yet sometimes, irresistible. Especially as our five year old terms herself a "foodie," which is pretty accurate considering some of her favorite foods are menu items like sushi (cooked of course), crab cakes, arugula, salmon with capers, tamales, etc. Of course the other child's palette is more geared towards donuts and Pirates Booty…cest la vie.

At any rate, we had a getaway last weekend to SF. What a phenomenal eating city. Of course the Ferry Terminal is a destination not to be missed. I had to go 2/2 days we were there. Some of my favorites include Miette Patisserie, for amazing confections,

Hog Island Oyster Co., and of course the Saturday Farmers market is nothing short of spectacular. You can always count on a long line for both Roli Roti (succulent meats rotating on skewers, which takes the food truck food trend to a soaring-high new level), taking in a whiff walking by it can't be missed and Blue Bottle Coffee Co, which has a cult like following, that even amazed me–living in the land of the coffee snobs and all. I thought the market feature of "veggie valet" where one can leave their purchases for a few hours while they walk, shop, etc. was super clever and practical to boot.

But then closer to home a really divine, Melrose Market in Seattle drives home the point that we are not too far off in stature, as a totally legit food city. Next up, Top Chef Seattle? Read this article in New York Times: (PS, giving cred. to my F.I.L. for finding this article) This "one stop shop" boasts phenomenal cheeses, butcher counter, flowers, pantry with wonderful spices, and other specialty items,

The driving force behind this gourmet dream is the new home to gem of a restaurant Sitka and Spruce. Check it!

A Third Child

…is what I said I always wanted, and now I have it. In the four-legged, furry form, however. A new little puppy officially named: Tucker (some homage to Nantucket)Nugget Lilly. We call him by his nickname, Nugget, Nuggie, the Nug, etc.

Here’s the story: While taking some summer vacay. We were walking a trail in Suncadia Resort, and went to check out the progress on Swiftwater Winery, opening. Owner, Lori Watts was a bit distracted on our tour as mentioned trying to find homes for 9 abandoned lab puppies that one of the construction workers on the site had found that morning. He said he saw a truck off in the distance that skid away and the little puppies were running after it.

So we walk to the crate under a tree on a hot summer morning,to discover little black & yellow mounds of puppy yumminess. Who could do this? Leave little babies like this? As you could imagine, it was only moments before the gears started going in my brain, to say nothing of my heart strings…and away we walk with a puppy in our arms.

Doggies
So here we are with all his brothers and sisters and their adoptive parents. I know Uncle Jackson is looking down from heaven and smiling.

Food Obsession Du Jour

Food Obsession Du Jour=Burrata

Burrata

It’s FRIDAY!  And we have the world’s most special house guests with us. So of course, need to bring some culinary big guns to the table.  First up tonight,  Cava & Burrata Crostinis.  Our guests are on a big kick having just returned from Spain, and it turns out the Cava will work perfectly with cutting the richness of the cheese. Our version of “happy hour” in the garden.

Granted, I’ve never met a cheese I don’t like, but burrata is on another level. I’m sure you are familiar, but if not, we’re talkin’ fresh italian cheese, the outer portion is solid mozzarella and the inside contains cream and mozzarella. Pretty much ooey goey yumminess.  It’s hard to get, has a limited shelf life and is of course a bit on the extravagant side, something like $15.99/pound, but worth every bite.

Made by hand–check
Rich & Delicate–check
Cream Infused Balls of Goodness–check

Burrata is such a show-stopper, it requires minimal fussing.

World’s Simplest Recipe:
We simply grill some crostinis, rub with garlic, top with a nice heaping portion of burrata, a sprinkle of salt & pepper, a drizzle of good quality olive oil, and some red pepper flake.

Mouth watering, yet?
