Books as Design Elements

I realize we are all soooo into everything “digital” these days.  Sigh.  And I may just be the last on the planet to read a book on a Kindle, sorry Amazon friends.  But, “real” books are just too good for too many reasons to name.

For the sake of this post, let’s focus on books as design elements.  Love books in decor as we all have them–so if you’re feeling a little “decor-poor” use something you already have for an instant refreshed look.  Like these pseudo end tables below.

And look how orderly and appealing this collection of books appear when organized according colors of the ROY G. BIV (ahhh acroynyms from school days.)

Talk about a fun project to release some O.C.D. with a super visually appealing outcome.   Now, to just procure some wonderful white built-ins like these.  See (future) Dream House post…

Onto these next two images taken from a book I was just given called UNDECORATE by Christiane Lemieux–Check out this “undone” look, though equally as sophistocated in my book (ha ha).  Take a gander below.

I’m obsessed with the beauty of these book stacks acting as pillars or a simple perch for these classic blue hydrangeas.

I also super into this next little vignette for the drama factor.

So…I’ve got some Great Expectations (can’t resist the book puns!) of the remixing possibilities!   How about you?

Too much Bubbly?

You know the days that you’re at least 3 beats behind?  That is me today.

I have no idea why…maybe, just maybe, fueled by too many bubbles last night?  Ooops.

First this Nicolas Feuillatte on our deck (yes that is sun that you see peering through!  it’s gone today already though.)

Then this bottle of Tattinger sent as a surprise by my in laws to Luc, last night.  Awww.

Gotta run, heading out for a shot of wheatgrass now.

Nine Years Ago

Nine years ago today…

180 of our closest family and friends gathered on Nantucket Island as my betrothed and I exchanged our vows.

It was a day filled with sun, fun, sea air, shellfish…

Gratitude, cobbled stone streets…

Cocktails, Love–of course, dancing by E. Cliff and the Swing Dogs (are they still around?), and so much more!

We’ll never forget how happy that day was and how varied, joyful and in parts, challenging (anyone who tells you otherwise is fibbing), our life together has been since.

It was our very own Royal Wedding.  Please no gagging:)  I could post so many more photos, but #1 to date us, these are all pics of hard copy pics.  As this was a time before the digital age blossomed, wow we’re old! Plus, we’ve got to save some for the upcoming 10th!

Follow your bliss…

Southwest Sizzle

I cannot tell a lie, we had a blast on our recent adventure to Arizona.

The climate is such a stark contrast to ours, which alone makes for both novelty (like something as basic as wearing shorts!) and fun.  Plus, I’m a firm believer that a simple glance up to palm trees set in front of clear turquoise skies– immediately lowers ones blood pressure.

I’ve been going to Scottsdale now for years, (this picture is actually taken at the Royal Palms, which I have posted about before, and still adore!) though much remains unchanged from what I remember of Old Scottsdale, etc. the sprawl to the north down Scottsdale Rd. seems to be the new direction of development for the area.

A few extra special stops of note to share.

Kierland Commons has been around 6 years or so, but still seems new and fresh.  This outdoor shopping area provides some quality shopping and eats. We loved fun concept restaurant Chloe’s Corner that serves as a gourmet convenience store, with delish salads, sandwiches, etc.

This kid friendly haunt is a place where you can belly up to the “bar” to enjoy among other things, a grilled cheese, a milk shake, a glass of wine or .50 coffee–which I loved considering it is located right next to a Starbucks!

We also thoroughly enjoyed the splash park as a cool off from the Railroad Park in Scottsdale–(Which, we hit twice!  The park is free and only $1 for a ride on the “choo choo” and carousel, kids were in heaven!)

But let’s face it, kids can get exhausting, at which point I headed to the anchor of the area, The Westin Kierland, and their Agave Spa for a treat/ment.

Here I am decompressing, kid-free and post massage…ahhhhh!

Onto prepping for a night on the town and over across the street to newly developing Scottsdale Quarter. Pop into this new high end outdoor shopping area for a primping session at the cool Dry Bar.

Love me a good blowout, and how cute is this canary yellow chandelier made of hair dryers?!

A tour of new & happenin’ hotels and night spots isn’t complete without a stop to The W Scottsdale. Though I certainly don’t walk on water,

it almost seems like one could here.  The white hot pool scene is aptly called WET and is perched dramatically above the hotel entrance with four large portholes on the bottom, allowing “surprise” views from below!

Always a sucker for dramatic lighting, check out these uber cool lanterns that set the hip pool scene vibe.

I recommend “wetting” your whistle with a Vitamin W Cocktail, a mix of Grey Goose L’Orange vodka, muddled raspberries, DeKuyper raspberry liqueur and orange, cranberry and lime juices.  It will only set you back a mere $12 bucks:)  That’s 12 rides on the carousel!

And finally, no trip to the area is complete without a Southwestern inspired meal.

Mission, located in the heart of Old Scottsdale next to the old Mission

is the place for amazing table side guacamole.  This restaurant totally hits the mark for beautiful atmosphere and other succulent “modern latin” fare.

Of course sometimes “low brow” hits the spot equally as well, in which case I must admit, we ended the trip with a couple bags of Double Doubles from always mouth watering, In-N-Out Burger.

Adios Amigos!

What A Difference A Week Makes

Geez, we left for vacation a week ago. Just a few world events have transpired in that time:

First, the marrying of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge a.k.a, William & Kate.  There was so much about this moment that will remain permanently etched into my mind (as well as the rest of the world), but smirks and giggles shared between 2 people in love, whether royal or regular was a truly touching and emotional moment.  Smiling through a kiss, is the absolute sign of happiness in my book.

Ohh and that dress!!!!!!!  McQueen it was…and true perfection at that.  My mother also wore a long sleeve wedding gown, watch this as an upcoming trend in wedding couture.

Almost as much as the nuptials, I was also so inspired by the immense British nationalism in the air.  British flags waving in every possible direction.  It made me pine for a moment like this closer to home,  (the irony, in a sec. below)

And who can stop looking at the recaps and coverage from the crazy hats from the weekend…? Oh Princess Beartice, such an unfortunate choice.

Transition to a serious moment.  Then to follow this highly anticipated and dramatic event, with the surprise news that so deeply impacts our country: the capture and bringing to justice of Osama Bin Laden.

Watching groups of Americans gathered outside the Pentagon, The White House, at Ground Zero, etc.  chanting “USA USA…”  filled me with so much pride in our great country.

Proud to be an American and may we all sleep a little better tonight.

And finally speaking of how great this country is…it’s true that my family got to escape to a wonderful place filled with warmth and perhaps more importantly, dryness!  I’ll provide more detail on that tomorrow.  It seems a little too fluffy given the context in the world for the moment.  Stay tuned.
