This Weekend At the Market

Well, we got at least one sunny day this weekend.  Still haven’t broken the 70 degree mark yet though..ahh, something to to look forward to.

Anyhoo, time to get down to the business at hand–what we found this weekend at the farmer’s market.

First up, asparagus–which were fat and all around gi-normous!

I love how asparagus are such a simple veg. to work with.  Pretty much throw em on the grill with some, salt & pepper, olive oil and voila!  Or check out this easy pisy recipe from Ina Garten for Roasted Asparagus from Food TV here

Next stand, mustard greens which are packed with all kinds of nutritional value, like cholesterol lowering properties, and cancer prevention (sounds kind of stupid, but is supposedly true…).

This yummy recipe from Simply Recipes also seems like a cinch and is on our menu for the week.  Check it out here.

And for the final green on the scene, check out these weird but cool looking Lady Fern Fiddleheads

Beware though, these gourmet wild grown vegetables are not all edible, so make sure you are getting them from a good source and overcome the temptation to forage on your on without knowing for sure.  Interesting recipe found on Food 52 for preparing these unusual curled tips here.

Happy Monday.

Weeding Your Garden

Weeding is back breaking, but so gratifying and addicting don’t you think?  Once I start, I’m on a mission…

I did some major weeding over the weekend and am hooked.  Actually, I’ve been doing this all year long, as weeding is such a metaphor for life too.  What kind of stuff are you taking out to make room for better growth?

I wish I would have taken a “before” pic., but this is the “after” of one particularly weed-prone corner.  Next up, some pops of colors needed.  Hmmm, what to buy???

When I’m all done (Then again, when will that be?  Afterall, one is never really “done” with a garden–it’s such an evolution) with my projects, perhaps I’ll reward myself with some fun garden future like this chair from Ravenna Gardens?

Or even better, this delightful little love seat for two.

I’ll continue posting more pics. from around the garden as we have so much goin’ on out there.  A huge patch of Lily of the Valley, Forget Me Nots a plenty,

and soooo much more.

Happy Weekend And Weeding!

Burgertime

Remember that arcade game from the 80’s?  I was actually pretty good at it, but alas, ” a gamer” I am not.  I still don’t know how to use our Xbox Kinect.

Though I’m in a serious “food mood” lately.    So wanted to share a particularly memorable meal/burger.

Just look at this beauty, glistening in the sun…

Uneeda Burger’s mouthwatering Mediterranean Lamb Burger, complete with a tempura fried lemon (who would have thunk it?).

Yum and Yum.  By the way, the tasted as good as it looks.   And so it is, burgers on the grill tonight.

This Weekend At The Market

Still coming off a Mother’s Day high…and for those of you who wondered if I actually got the Mini convertible…the answer is, I wish.  We signed up for Zip Car.  Love love, love it!  Soooo easy and such a fun way to “test drive.”

While some folks may enjoy a formal brunch in a restaurant a country club or somewhere.  Here we are very happily eating ours Al fresco at the Farmer’s Market.

Foodie Daughter # 1 enjoying a gyro with cabbage and pickled veg. on the side.  Not So Much a Foodie Daughter #2, enjoying some mini cinnamon donuts.

Quick report on the weekend’s catch.  As I mentioned yesterday, it was a banner weekend at the Market–we went to 3 in all.  University, Ballard & Fremont.

First, baby turnips are a true spring find at the market. In fact, they are also called, spring turnips, Japanese white turnips or Harukai turnips.  And you know what else?  You can actually eat the greens on the top too (bonus!), though I may suggest sauteing them.

Can’t wait to try this recipe for Baby White Turnip Salad with Toasted Pecans and Bacon Here.

Then we found some promising looking starts for sugar snap peas

When these are big enough, I’m going for Tyler Florence’s recipe for Shrimp with Sugar Snap Peas Here

And you know what they say about “an apple a day.” Check out these beautiful box of pink lady apples

For these, I’m thinking Martha Stewart’s adventurous, yet surprisingly simple recipe for Chicken with Cauliflower & Apples Here.

Bon Apetit!

Mother’s Day Bliss

Best Holiday of the Year?  For me– Mother’s Day.  For sure.

C’mon, what is not absolutely dreamy about the one day of the year, a sleep depraved Mama has carte blanche to sleep in, then be served breakfast in bed (eggs bene. with crisp bacon, sliced apples and granola, served with piping hot coffee–perfection!)?

As for gifts, I really couldn’t want anything more than hand made cards and good deeds for the day, BUT, I have always wanted a Mini Cooper…

Did I get one?

Kind of.  For the day at least:)

This is us rolling around town with the top down (heat blasting and warm clothes mind you) To quote Julia Roberts, “these babies, corner like they are on rails.” Vrrooom!

Speaking of wheels…and of Mothers…and joy.  This is my Mom & Me a LONG time ago.

Perhaps one of my favorite photos of all time.

“Other things may change us, but we start and end with family” – Anthony Brandt

P. S.  Come visit again tomorrow.  We hit 3 markets this weekend!  Lots of fun stuff to share.
