Staying Still

Life moves pretty fast, right?  You know, as Ferris would say…

And then suddenly it doesn’t.  A few days ago, due to an accident, life slowed down pretty significantly for me.  I am having surgery in a couple days.

So I’m slowing down and trying to cope with my inner “control freak” while taking a look around.

I will try to be lighter about things (like this funny magnet I came across–and P.S. my garden does k.a.). And try not take everything so seriously, which is not so easy for me.

I know there are lessons to be learned through this experience; like humility and appreciation of basic things like mobility. Being grateful for those that surprise us with thoughtfulness, support and generosity and not projecting expectations onto others.

I’m going to try to stay online, but that’s not a promise.  We’ll see, one day at a time is the new mantra.  Oh wait, do I hear a title for tomorrow’s post?  Gotta run (Ok, maybe not so much, see I’m still not adjusted to this speed) and research how to bling out my cast.  Check out this cool one we are determined to out-do from the Ortho-Pod’s office yesterday.

There’s got to be a silver lining somewhere in this…

Meal of a Lifetime

Driving to The Corson Building mid week in prime-time evening rush hour traffic, while frantically consulting Bing Maps en route, “it’s not here”… “it can’t be here,” then to find the destination located underneath the interstate and literally adjacent to train tracks, hardly had the makings for “meal of a lifetime.

But it was.

…Enter The Corson Building.  Who would have thought a European looking, understated yet elegant, Villa type structure would be inconspicuously tucked into a industrial (to say the least) part of town?

We were the lucky guests of dear friends who asked us to join an 8 course meal paired with amazing wine pairings from Walla Walla’s Buty Winery.

First we gathered for some Prosecco in the garden (while the rest in our party sped over in said rush hr. traffic)

We wondered the grounds to check out the lush herbs and veggies that oftentimes appear on dinner plates later in the evening.

And took in the charming touches like this re-purposed bird bath to make any visitor who may fly by feel at home.

Those welcoming touches continued for the two-legged visitors upon entering the inviting interior dining space.

An intimate and European atmosphere is set with long farm tables for communal style dining

But enough of this stage-setting, let’s get to the goods or grub (though very elevated grub, I should add).  I didn’t take a picture of all the courses because #1 it’s really hard to photograph food to make it look as good as it is actually tastes in person #2, there is a reason there are food photographers #3 it’s kinda obnoxious, and if I start doing that, friends may not invite me to dinner any more–some are already tired of me “blogging” about everything as it is, ha! I said it:)

Buty Wine Dinner at The Corson Building, August 18, 2011

2) Pork rillette with mustard & crackers

2009 Buty Semillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle

3) Lettuces, raw beets, walnuts, & Kurt’s cheese

4) Fried fushimi peppers, cantaloupe & chantrelles

2009 Buty Conner Lee Vineyard Chardonay

5) Tomatoes, pecaches & mustard greens with bacon & vinegar (this one was my favorite!!)

6) Marinated squid with roasted peppers, capers and aioli

2008 Buty “Redivia of the Stones”

2007 Buty “Columbia Redivia” Phiny Hill Vineyard Estate Grown

8) Yogurt & rose geranium sorbet with berries & shortbread

So there you have it, a meal of a lifetime.  My favorite, was course #5– the one with the peaches and tomatoes, it was a pure slice of summer heaven.  My favorite wine was the 2007 Buty “Columbia Redivia” Phiny Hill Vineyard Estate Grown

Bare in mind, this was an 8 course dinner and though it happened about two weeks ago now and I think I’m still full.  Thank you so much J. & G. for inviting us to the table.

Cheers!

DJ Jazzy Get-away

Oh-kay, Here’s the situation, I went away for a week-end vacation… (It’s a lot more amusing if you sing this post to the beat of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince‘ “Parents Just Don’t Understand” circa 1989)

“We went cruisin’ down south on the P.C.H.

Headin’ to Dana Point St. Regis Place.

Went straight to the pool to check the situation…

Oh-kay, this is going to be a nice place to spend our vay-cation.

I put my hand on the wheel and my foot on the gas, making sure to not drive the rental Prius too fast.  But we almost got whip lash we took off so fast.

Laguna was pumpin’

Shopping was bumpin’

Even Monarch Private Beach Club was thumpin’  But the beach was callin’

No more stallin’

Time to surf

Out here there’s no turf

So to all you other kids across the land,

I know you understand–get your tush on a plane and find some sweet sand.

(My apologies, for terrible rap form!)

Additional sources o’ fun:

Food: 242 Cafe Fusion, The Rooftop, Hennessey’s, (actually this is mostly drinks, and I’m pretty sure we were the oldest ones in the place, but still fun) and last but not least Las Brisas

Battery Recharging

When asked by six-year-old,

“Mom, why do you need to go on a girls-trip without us?”  (Not said, but implied: and why do you need to stay at a 5 star resort without us???)

I replied,

“Honey, you know when we need to charge up the dust buster so it works again…”  (Not said but implied: and you have no business staying in a 5 star resort)

“Well, Mommies need to get re-charged sometimes too”

The expression on her face was perfectly clear as though the explanation totally got through.  Yessss!  Every once in a while  I totally nail a response to a tough question like this.

So above picture is “Before.”

Picture below:

“During.”  This is me literally sprinting into a flock of seagulls. I mean, why not?

And “After.”

OK, OK, that’s not me, though do wish.  Wouldn’t life be so good?

The good news is, that I’m at least half/way charged.  The bad, perhaps I am procrastinating a wee little bit, because I have soooo much info. to form into a “real post” from this trip…   including hilarious travel adventure stories regarding rental cars and more…stay tuned!

Endless Summer?

I wish, but in fact it’s coming to and end.  I have to be honest, I’ve found myself in a bit of a blog back log.  Too much to say (not to mention, too much to do), not enough time to say it, and on top of it all, how can it be that it’s really the last week of summer?

Something feels a bit unfair for it all to really be coming to the end.  But before getting too immersed in buying school shoes this week, gathering supplies and thinking of fall activities,  let’s try to hang on to some of the last  summer, if for only a moment.

I just returned  from an amazing girl’s weekend away in Southern Cali (later this week, a full recount of restaurants, food galore, luxury hotels and travel adventures).  In the meantime, enjoy a few quick pics. depicting “endless summer.”

Could there be a cooler ride for toting around a surfboard?

Checking the surf conditions.

Green flag means GO!

Surf’s up!   There is something so timeless, beautiful and simply “summer” about catching the perfect wave, don’t you think?

Oh look it’s Spicoli!  Catch you later Dudes.
