One Man’s Trash, Another’s Treasure

Flea Marketing is such a favorite weekend family activity.

Even though we had a great weather weekend and spring cleaning started to hit,  I can usually be persuaded to add a special treasure or two.

I’m always drawn to old wooden frames.  I love to use them as a perimeter or border to scale smaller frames in a collection or just to add more interest by layering.

I was intrigued by these portraits.  Picking up a piece here and there is just the way to keep your art collection looking eclectic, interesting and un-fussy.

A stack of vintage suitcases is instant side table while simultaneously sending out the “well-traveled” vibe.

I am lamenting not getting this driftwood lamp.  A new, clean white drum as a lampshade would immediately transform this piece into “high end” decor, don’t you think?

Hopefully, we’ll all be picnic’ing soon enough.  Even though the groundhog did see his shadow I am told.

Happy Monday.

Begin Kitchen Reno.

Apologies for the radio silence.

We are finally getting around to getting our kitchen to a place that’s more reflective of our style and less 1990’s…

First up, painting the maple cabinets white.

Yes, it’s quite the mess.  Doors and drawers off and currently being painted off-site.  Tuesday is the big install.

I’ll keep you all updated with photos along the way.  Of course, the domino effect has begun too.  Suddenly I “h word” as my kids say, the back splash, so that is likely next and the floor…and wouldn’t a farmhouse sink look so nice…and maybe we should just take that wall out…and, and, and. oiy yi yi.

This Weekend at the Market

Northwesterners are a hearty bunch.

We head out to forage the Farmer’s Markets even in the cold months like January.

What’s fresh you ask?  Why, plenty actually.

A bag full of root veggies for $4 bucks, that’s a no brainer.  Stumbled across an article “How To Turn Boring Winter Produce Into Inspired Dishes” on Chow.com

I love the color and texture of these cabbages.  Now is the time to be perfecting your Corned Beef and Cabbage cooking technique.

Soups are key for the repertoire right now. Martha’s recipe for Cannellini Bean Soup  is on the menu for the week.

Full disclosure, we come here for some good eats too, the kids love the tamales and anything we can do to keep them off the nugget train is good with me.

And how’s this for some good karma?

Happy Monday.

Emerald City

There are few places as beautiful as Seattle on a sunny day. So some photos needed to be shot today to document the glorious scenes of green.

As most Seattle-ites will attest, days like today must be 100% seized.

And the fact that we are green all year long is something we take for granted.  Note green grass and if you look closely, glowing moss growing on the sidewalk. Hard to believe it was all covered with snow less than a week ago.

And the foliage is insane

Like Heather creeping up through rocks

Hellebore dancing in the sun.

Kissing balls twirling from pergolas

Even the hydrants in the ‘hood are green.

And my mailbox with some greenish patina to match.

On days like today, “there’s no place like home. ”  Happy Weekend Everyone.

Be Original

Isn’t originality such a difficult concept right now? After all, our world is full of so much “copy and paste,” “pinning and re-pinning,” posting and sometimes re-packaging others ideas as your own. I’m sure I’m guilty of having done versions of that stuff here and there too.  No one wants to recreate the wheel, why should they as suddenly we all have access to so much at fingertips.

But we all know,  that it’s so much easier to critique than to create or far easier to improve up than to actually invent.

Some days it feels like a true challenge to have an original thought in one’s head. As much as I love to be connected via all these technological “communities” and am a believer in sharing and collaborating–for the immediate moment, there’s so much noise that I can’t hear myself think.

So, I’m going to try to focus on inventiveness and creation and originality. And trying to see the forest through the trees or through the geraniums…

Wish me luck!
