There’s Still Time!

To squeeze in a few last summer picnics or patio dinners (and our outside patio area is still under renovation, full post once it’s complete) and if you ask me, end of summer produce and food is the peak of the year.

download-59Don’t let the pending back to school nonsense ruin the buzz just yet, there’s a little more summer to squeeze out.  A few of my favorite, fresh and super easy summer sides.

Watermelon Feta Rounds

download-60This is sort of my own spin on something I found on Pinterest.  I cut watermelon into 1-1.4 inch thick slices.  Then used a 2 inch diameter circle form to cut out bite sized platforms of melon.  I sprinkled feta on top, then some finely diced fried shallots, and drizzled balsalmic glaze on top.  The people I served this to, literally went wild.

Tomato & Peach with Basil

download-58This is one of favorite summertime combos and so so easy.  Simply cut peaches (we have a local “Peach Man” who sells peaches on the side of the road that we wait for every year) and the freshest tomatoes you can get your hands on into bite sized wedges.  Cut thin strips of basil, sprinkle salt and pepper to taste, drizzle with a few drops of olive oil and voila.  Plop on a mound of fresh burrata if you want to go extra rich (frankly it’s not really needed) Melt in your mouth goodness.

Grilled Squash & Zucchini

download-61No recipe here, I like to buy the smaller sized zucs. and squash, then just simply split down the middle and spritz with some extra virgin olive oil and throw on the grill.  Nothing says summer bounty like veggies plucked straight from the garden as these.

Chilled Avocado Soup

download-63

This is such a crowd pleaser and soooo easy.  We brought this to our neighborhood’s local jazz in the park picnic night, served in clear plastic cups.

avocado-soup-cl-lI totally recommend not skipping the dungeness crab garnish.  It adds that last WOW factor.

Antipasti

download-62Full disclosure here, this is from one of Seattle’s best (I.M.O.) outdoor rooftops and restaurant’s The Pink Door.  But we replicate the same kind of idea frequently on the patio at home in the summer.  Simply find a good market and assemble some of your favorite cured meats, olives, pickled veggies and whatever looks good.  Great, un-fussy summer-time eats!

Here’s to savoring the last of summer goodness.  Happy Monday.

Everything Old is New Again

Upon returning to Nantucket this summer, there is an almost a ready-to-wet-myself sense of excitement. The rush hits me on the plane when approaching the shores.

download-43I immediately begin making my mental check list of visiting the old and familiar island spots and checking out the new.  This summer I knew one of the first spots I HAD to check out was The Nantucket.  Or as those of you who attended our wedding reception over a decade ago would remember it, The Point Breeze Hotel.

download-44

Of course I was a little leary of how a complete renovation such as was done on the original building constructed in 1891, (photo now)

download-57

would honor pristine memories of a charmed wedding day… (photo then)

but the experience of walking through the “new” property beyond exceeded my expectations.  They did such a lovely job of blending original old world charms and grandeur into a modern day hotel experience. (photo then)

download-49

We originally chose the venue for the reception as the largest (also oldest and most historic) indoor grand ballroom on island to accommodate our robust guest list.  And we were woo’d by the elegant and timeless porch, (photo now)

download-53I am thrilled they kept this element in tact.  The porch is one of the few aspects of the renovation to remained unchanged. (photo then)

Designed for breezes (a la Point Breeze) conversation, and watching the world go by, whether it be over a 100 years ago or today.  (photo now)

Savoring Seattle Summer

Weather-wise this summer in Seattle has frankly been the summer of the century.  And those of you who have been here, know that a good (and let’s be honest, some summers they are rare, though this summer deliciously abundant) day in Seattle is hard to beat.

20130810_144243Literally, we are trying to drink it all in.  We spent the whole weekend at the water’s edge (we kind a had to distract ourselves as our other daughter is on the East Coast and we were really missing her).  A quick overnight super-treat to The Four Seasons.

20130810_141741Followed by an easy and fun day trip to Bainbridge Island.  If you have not yet been, treat yourself!  They have a delightful Saturday Farmer’s Market, fun state park Faye Bainbridge, charming town filled with restaurants and unique shops and more…

20130809_104141But our trip this time was truly inspired by a chance to check out my friend Kim’s new seaside paradise on her birthday.

20130809_164254to say I was green with envy is an understatement more like blue with envy as this is literally her view from the back “yard”  Oh yes, that is a cruise ship in the background headed up to Alaska.

20130809_161414 20130809_162135 20130809_16232820130809_16150320130809_16151320130809_165856They have “peaced out” on city living… who can blame them?  Their view from the secret garden entrance20130809_162444And if you can believe it keeps going, the view from the front of the house, as you can see it was very low tide.

20130809_162531All good things must come to an end.

20130809_203633So we suffered through this sunset on our cruise back to Seattle.

May I mentally refer to this summer light once the days get shorter and darker.

Happy Monday!

It’s Friday, It’s Summer

Happy Summer Weekend!

Dressed Doorways

I still haven’t been able to upload all my material from Nantucket, my apologies. But better late than never….

I am always so taken by the level of attention and care that islanders give to their homes and gardens.  It starts with the doorway.  These are but a smattering of all the charming island entrances. Enjoy the eye candy!

Whether it be a unique shade of paint, inspired planter boxes, shutters, an antique detail, they all certainly say, “welcome home.”

Which is your favorite?
