Attention All Foodie DIY’ers
Wanted to share a last minute culinary project/hostess gift for the foodies on your list.
My culinarily talented husband (he makes me look good sometimes) whopped up a delicious batch of tomato jam over the weekend that we have been busy delivering to friends
We found a yummy Recipe for Tomato Jam on Serious Eats
Then we procured some fresh ricotta from DeLaurentis market, and layered homemade basil (by this time, the house was smelling divine)
into wide ball jars and topped with our jam.
(By the way, the jam is way good enough to be stand on its own. Serving suggestions include a smear on grilled cheese, on a BLT you name it)
Red & green goodness to be scooped on to crackers, grilled bread, smeared on crudite,
Put a Tree on It!
Enjoying the holidays? Whether relaxed in front of the fire (yeah right!?) or cursing out the long line at the post office, regardless of where you may be in the holiday stress spectrum, I’m trying to remind myself to appreciate the festivity and beauty of it all too.
One of my favorite aspects of the holidays is how everyone tends to turn up the volume, on well, everything. And let’s be real, sometimes it’s a little too loud. But this is a time to have fun with the symbols of the season.
Even simple things like cars driving their freshly plucked trees home or donning clever wreaths as a welcome and nod to the season, puts a smile on my face and spreads joy…
Here’s to enjoying both the simplicity and splendor of the season. So remember to take a look around and enjoy!
Psst, 8 more days…
Feather the Nest Festive
It’s both overwhelming and exciting to break out the Christmas decor, don’t you think?
But setting the mood at home, whether simple or elaborate is a critical part of enjoying the holidays, if you ask me.
In addition to figuring out the right place to start, it’s sometimes hard to find the right place to stop.
like these silver garlands (sourced from the dollar store) that were calling to be a part of the frosty mercury glass display
Incorporating whimsy is fun, such as this red nose I couldn’t resist adding to “Rudolph.” And of course, prominently displaying our family & friends’ cards is a joy that we look forward to all year long.
In our house, it’s important to remember why we celebrate the season, so a kresh filled with kid-made fired clay pieces is a big part of that. I also love the leather camels a friend gave us as a gift from her trip to Morocco. Tis the season to blend old with new–handmade with, well, Dollar Store…and whatever makes you happy.
We try keeping up with holiday traditions, such as growing paper whites from bulbs and hoping they bloom in time in time for Christmas, which builds the anticipation of the season.
Pops of color and contrasts delight the senses.
As far as outside goes, I struggle to keep my Clark Griswold at bay, and be tasteful, though going big is so fun. That wreath is 2 feet in diameter. It might need a big loud ribbon on it, stay tuned.
You can never really have too many garlands or–
Hope you’re having a good holiday season and Enjoy feathering your nest!
Set the Stage…I mean table.
OK, maybe that wasn’t such the inadvertent slip, after all when we are hosting a dinner party that is really what in fact we are doing, setting the stage by setting a warm table. And frankly, I love doing it. It’s like putting together a killer outfit, you need the right blend of accessories, texture and palette, yet there are no rules.
First things first, an occasion like a dinner party calls for polishing the silver. We use our silver for every day, but let’s be honest…it doesn’t exactly get polished frequently, and the sheen makes a big difference.
Sometimes I like to “splurge” (albeit this was under $20) with a new linen like this pretty flax and gold table cloth I picked up at Marshalls.
It’s always fun to blend old and new, like these old mixed white and gold China plates, Chilewhich place mats , mix matched white linen and khaki napkins and the ever useful/sturdy mason jars.
When assembling a low linear centerpiece, you can easily grab things from around your home (actually at any height), which is what I did here with antlers and satsumas that charm with their droopy leaves. With this good start, -I only needed to buy a small amount of flowers.
Blush colored roses, a few stemmed cabbages, orange tulips and–
Yes, a few stems of birds of paradise too, can’t help it, were calling to me. L.R. does this vase look familiar?
Happy beginning of the season, and happy table setting!
