Life is Precious

Wanted to take a little break today from the superficial and material and remind myself that life is delicate and precious.

We have been receiving texts and phone calls all morning wondering if my husband was on the commuter train that tragically collided with a car yesterday and killed 7 people in the NYC area.  Unbelievably grateful that he was not, and unbelievably sorry for those who were.  After all they were mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, friends, and more to someone.  There have been other tragedies too, a Nantucket family friend struck by a car, illness and various other life curve balls.

Reminding myself today of what is important.  The family we are raising, and the ones who raised us, our extended family, our friends who live in other places, many super special friendships that were recently left behind, the new friendships we are forming.  Lest I not forget the abundance of kindness that has been extended our way as we transition into a new life.  I am truly grateful.

So a pause will be put on all that seems so important: the organization and errands, the due dates, the kid’s lessons and play dates and summer camps, and vacation planning and lists and house projects.  It can all wait.  Remember what’s important and that life is fragile.

Snowed in, Will Putter

What’s a gal to do when snowed in? For me, it’s putter around, with the ever-evolving interior design of our new home.  This morning, it’s the living room.  A big space that needs a lot of help and puttering.

chair3I put heavy furniture that I couldn’t otherwise move, like this chartreuse Chinoiserie cabinet, on handy dandy slide guides and suddenly I become quite self-sufficient.  My Aunt who is my remote interior consultant (lots of text photos exchanged) thinks the mirror should be hung lower, now that I see it here, I have to agree, too bad I can’t put that bad boy on slides.

chairOver the weekend we picked up a pair of these cool black leather chrome chairs from an awesome Antique salvage place in Philly. We acquired some other cool treasures for other rooms, that I will share with you at some point too.

chair2With such a neutral base, the room needs more pops of color like the cabinet, will be looking for fun art, maybe even some DIY projects?  Also on the hunt for an over-sized and airy coffee table and a flokati rug.

picture-uh=2e69549fc162c3e0e87483a67240731-ps=7a815ec44ea7e4654f8d94eca83ff7eThis is what the room looked like before, lovely, yet we have a different aesthetic.  For the time being, the curtains are down, the paint has been lightened to my go to: Light Pewter.  Next up, styling the bookshelves, sounds simple enough but is kind of daunting actually.

Happy puttering:)

Not sure Who’s The Master, Bath?

Isn’t the term “master” relating to bedrooms and baths, kind of weird?  I’m certainly no one’s master and don’t have one that I’m aware of either, but…

Never the less, considering we’ve never had a master bedroom/bath, and had become accustomed to sharing sticky toothpaste filled sinks with our daughters.  I can’t lie, having a real “master bath” feels a little luxurious.

So the “his/hers” sinks or his/his or hers/hers whatever your preference may be, is pretty groovy and a claw foot tub, has long been in the “dream-house” file.

Check out our master bath

bath5Just a few little cosmetic changes. Sherwin Williams Emerald paint of course, color is called Light Pewter by BM (we’ve painted many rooms this color, such a good base for art, pops of color and modern neutrality–must thank K.D. for this tip!)

bath2I could not resist the metallic garden stool.  I imagine it will roam around the house pretty freely in different functions, but for now it’s stationed in the master bath.

bath1We also have a “martini deck” off the master bath.  Yet another dated term, but I do look forward to fresh air and a beverage when the “white stuff” goes away.  Love this inherited rocker too.  Thanks A.P.

bath4The vanity is pretty simple.  When in doubt, add an orchid.

Happy Friday everyone, and GO SEAHAWKS!

Repainted Master BR

Reporting in from a blizzard.  Considering we haven’t lost power (still holding breath a little, while feeling grateful) there is really no excuse to not post.

Anyhoo, slowly working on making our new Master Bedroom our own.

master4The room has now been painted a blueish greyish that reminds me of water.br1I love how it gives just the right amount of oomph with the trim, yet is still tranquil.

master3A pintucked quilt is cozy and a bit glam in one.

master2Sitting area hosts orange pops of color for some contrast and whimsy.

Still working on styling dressers, the fireplace (which now has a flatscreen tv over, which is great–but not so much with the cords hanging down…) and a solution for the ceiling fan.  Check back for more progress.

Sweet snowy dreams to you.

Tuesday Quickie

What’s that they say, “We make plans, and God laughs.”

I was looking forward to a little road trip to the Cape this long weekend and to visit my dear Aunt. Yet, a stomach bug went ripping through our home.

Never the less, my husband and Father in Law rallied and accomplished the furniture collection mission. They brought back some real gems like this piece.

entryOld and from England, wearing a definite patina.  Me likey.

Thank you R.L.(for assuming my Uhaul driving responsibilities) and A.P./U.C. for passing along treasures.

But this must be quick as I return to my mind-numbingly long to-do list and to continuing to walk in circles around my house moving things, unpacking things and trying to make sense of it all.  As they also say, Rome wasn’t built in a day.  Trying to remind myself of this.

Have a great week everyone.
