Living Well 7’s third anniversary!

This is also my 365th post. Not an insignificant number.  So basically, I’ve posted every 3 days since this venture began. It has been rewarding and fun and cathartic.

It’s always been my goal to share my voice and perspective and to be, well, personal. I don’t know that I’ve truly achieved that, aren’t we always our own harshest critics? Don’t get me wrong, I feel like I’ve delivered a fun and light and a fresh take here and there. But I’ve drafted so many posts that are tender and weird and straight from my heart that have never seen the light of day. I guess it felt too, exposing shall we say? In looking forward, that may be a place I try to get—more from me, as an individual. We’ll see, I’m not exactly promising, but hoping.

So happy birthday to us.

I hope you keep reading and I will keep pluggin’ on my end.

We Can Pickle That!

A friend was just telling me about Portlandia Season 2 and a hilarious pickling skit (check it out here.) Why is that show so funny?  Probably as it can be so spot-on with Northwestern “norms” and the one about ordering an organic chicken in a restaurant still has me in stitches.  Anyhoo, I fully realize this post may be high risk for the over-pickling frenzy (we actually enjoyed a green pickled strawberry in a dish over the weekend at super-yummy Crush) we may have found ourselves in.  None the less, I really must recommend a yummy addition to your pantry:

Pickled Mission Figs.  Created by the food genius’ at one of my favorite local restaurants, Boat Street Cafe.

Star of last night’s Golden Globes cheese board!  Would be perfect host gift too.

Available for purchase in higher end Seattle (and maybe Portland:) grocery stores and here.

Vintage Find

Nothing says love more than a husband signing off on a border-line too big lamp.

Then carrying it many blocks to the car.  Sourced from Revolver Vintage Finds in Ballard.  But I have a vision and he trusts me:)  Stay tuned for some fun vintage additions to our home and some new styling I’m working on to post soon.

A Cold One

Everyone likes a cold one, and by this I’m not referring to a brewskie, but rather a new favorite holiday drink of mine.  It’s so refreshing, you really must try.

The Moscow Mule. How do you make it you ask?

Ingredients:

Preparation:

  1. Pour the vodka and lime juice into a copper mug with ice cubes.
  2. Top off with the ginger beer.
  3. Garnish with the lime wedge.

My brother who may be one of the world’s best gift givers of all time, gave us a set of four copper mugs for Christmas.  I strongly urge you to try yours with a copper mug, it keeps it extra cold, and they are just so cool looking, don’t you think?

Cheers!

Is the Light on in Your Window?

Ahhh, we made it–errr almost, there’s still New Year’s to go. Don’t get me wrong, ours was a wonderful holiday, filled with treats, warmth, laughter, Christmas programs, friends, and too many gifts to count.  And I hope yours was lovely too. Sure, our kids were up at 0 Dark: thirty and whipped through the packages with the pure excitement that only children who still “believe” in the magic of Christmas can, but this year, I think I’m suddenly starting to “get it.”  With most of the main holiday hoopla behind us now, I can stop to think of the true meaning of Christmas (regardless of your religion), it strikes me that something one of my friend’s recently mentioned, is the perfect imagery for the real meaning of the season:

The candle in the window.

The candle in the window is a symbolic gesture to be displayed as a sign of hospitality.  Traditionally it was a signal for the weary traveler looking for a place to stay or warm meal.  In Irish history, when it was illegal to practice Catholicism it was a welcome symbol for safe refuge for priests in hiding.

So I got to thinking, how are we living this value?  How are we helping those in need, how are we welcoming, how are we thinking beyond the seemingly infinite packages of American Girl doll everything and Amazon.com packages that came every single day  it seemed this past month?

I know it’s not much, but mid-day yesterday we made turkey sandwiches and put together brown bags with items like bottles of water and hand warmers.  We got in the car, with our hooded puffy coats (and jammies underneath, I’m not gonna lie, it took a lot of convincing to get everyone out the door) and went out to deliver them.  The sad thing is that we didn’t need to venture too far from our home to get them into the right hands.  Sure enough on Christmas day, people were standing in the rain with signs asking for help.  In an instant, our kids, understood the meaning of Christmas.

As I think of what’s ahead for the New Year, I know one thing for sure.  More helping to those in need.  More of keeping our light on all throughout the year.
