Low Country Love

The experience of being in the low country is so distinct. There almost aren’t words, but I will try. Thank goodness there are photos and hopefully these will help to tell a bit of the story.

The natural light is like one big mirror, (when the sky is blue, so is the water) and the colors–from the salt marshes,

to the greens, are subdued.

DSC_0589Nothing should be taken too seriously

DSC_0538and the tempo is typically slow, as life in the fast lane does not exist here.

DSC_0504

The native wildlife is unique (that is a wild boar in the grass, naturally)

DSC_0586even they don’t look like they are going anywhere too fast, though I wouldn’t exactly want to cross them.

Local flavor is meant to be savored

download-32and the  hospitality is nearly un-matched (super secret cheese toast recipe I’m sworn to not publicly share, but lick smackin’ scrumptious, for sure!)

DSC_0532as the goal is to welcome.

DSC_0536No hard edges here,

DSC_0539

more like soft sweeps

and it just feels as though time stands still.

Make Her Blush

It’s only Monday, don’t panic!  There’s still time to find something sweet for your Sweet.  I put together a little compile of 7 items that make my heart beat a little faster.

1. Isn’t this Juicy Couture Leni Charm Convertible Crossbody so much fun?  You can switch out charms per mood.  Love.

Sake to me!

Feeling the need to chase the winter blues away, we decided to host a party.  Having limited time these days, the challenge became: How to host a fun and festive party without tons of prep work, cooking, etc.?

DSC_0431The answer: Sushi party! Choc. full of lots of fun asian touches mixed with a bit of traditional and a dash of modern.  (think orchids and Chinoiserie)

4243118152_0e50acbbdd_zIt’s always fun to blend new and old dishes.

DSC_0449 Check out these new Midnight Willow dishes, sourced from World Market, I couldn’t resist to add to my collection to mix in with my old, red antique ones.

DSC_0446We stocked up on all kinds of fun rice crackers, wasabi peas, & almonds, seaweed-anything-I-could-get-my-hands on, ginger snacks…most sourced from Trader Joes.

DSC_0453Yeah yeah, fortune cookies aren’t really Japanese, but we simply had to have em.

DSC_0438My husband made his signature tuna tartare. We sourced some sashimi grade tuna from Costco.

DSC_0452And we experimented with Ina Garten’s recipe that was to die for, cannot recommend highly enough.

DSC_0458

Though some people asked if we made the sushi (“um, no.”) We catered the sushi from Blue C and they did a great job.

DSC_0444

I did however make a platter of fruit sushi.  Whimsy such as this is irresistible, even if it’s essentially a decorative token.

DSC_0459

Who knew that watermelon (exact tuna look alike!) and certain fruits can pass as dead ringers for nigiri?

DSC_0468I drained some bottles (in making a signature sake lemonade cocktail, 1 part sake 2 parts lemonade for the night) of sake to use as vases in support of a palette of bright colors

DSC_0467

Sleek bottles (isn’t this bottle cool?  it was given as a gift) and textures set the tone,

DSC_0460with little stations of food positioned all around to assist with moving the crowd (never the less, everyone still congregated in mass in our kitchen, always!).

DSC_0465The peeps were happy (though not everyone to get their shot snapped)

DSC_0466

to chase the winter blues away–

DSC_0462and I am secretly plotting the next one!

I wish I was here today instead.

Here’s to brighter longer days ahead.

Gift Wine Thoughtfully

We all love both giving and receiving wine.  On the giving end, it’s easy.  And on the receiving end…well, you get a bottle of wine out of it rather than something that may end up in the re-gifting pile…let’s be honest.

But how to do it so that it’s a little more thoughtful and festive?

First, dress it up.  I love a chic furry wine bag. A friend got me a bottle of birthday bubbly which made me sooo happy.  So much so that I went to Restoration Hardware to scoop up a bunch on sale to add to my stash to gift to others.  Check this out, they are on super sale for $4.99 now.  So cute and cozy, right?

Next, tell people about the wine.  As I’m learning more about wine my selection has morphed from choosing the most interesting label to actually considering why it’s unique, what it pairs well with, etc.  One of our friends added this thoughtful and informative label explaining the choice.  I love it.  Note how detailed the description is: “a lighter, ethereal Red.  A wine that makes you think.  A red that can be enjoyed with local salmon.”

And finally, select a vintage that is boutique.  By this I mean, not necessarily readily available at your corner grocery.  As an example, Lazy River Pinot Noir has become a favorite of ours.  The winemakers are locals and you buy direct from them.  It feels special to give one of their bottles.  Especially because it’s soooo good, it’s hard to part with.

Afterall, in the words of Ernest Hemingway, “Wine is the most civilized thing in the world.”
